Kugelis with Chicken Drumsticks
Lithuanian cuisine wouldn’t be complete without Kugelis—a rich, comforting potato pudding that has been bringing families together for generations. With its crispy golden crust, soft potato filling, and juicy chicken drumsticks, this traditional dish is perfect for family dinners, weekends, or special gatherings.
Using the MIGIRIS Electric Potato Grater, you can prepare perfectly grated potatoes in just minutes. Its consistent texture ensures excellent results every time, making homemade Kugelis easier than ever.
Ingredients
- 2 kg potatoes
- 2 medium onions
- 200 g smoked bacon
- 3 eggs
- 300 ml milk
- 6–8 chicken drumsticks
- Olive oil for cooking
- Salt, to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Instructions
1. Prepare the Bacon and Onions
Finely chop the onions and dice the smoked bacon.
Heat a small amount of olive oil in a frying pan and cook the bacon together with the onions until they become golden brown and slightly crispy. Season with salt and black pepper.
2. Grate the Potatoes
Grate the potatoes using the MIGIRIS Electric Potato Grater.
In just a few minutes, you’ll have perfectly grated potatoes with a smooth, even consistency—ideal not only for Kugelis but also for Cepelinai, potato pancakes, and many other traditional Lithuanian dishes.
3. Prepare the Potato Mixture
Beat the eggs into the grated potatoes and season with salt and black pepper.
Warm the milk without bringing it to a boil. Warm milk gives the Kugelis a smoother texture while helping the potatoes retain their light color.
Add the fried bacon and onions to the potato mixture, pour in the warm milk, and mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
4. Add the Chicken Drumsticks
Lightly grease a baking dish with butter or olive oil.
Arrange the chicken drumsticks evenly in the dish and pour the potato mixture over them, making sure they are completely covered.
Smooth the surface with a spoon.
5. Bake
Bake in a preheated oven at 220°C (425°F) for 70–80 minutes, or until the top is beautifully golden brown and crispy.
The chicken should be tender, juicy, and easily pull away from the bone.
Serving Suggestions
Allow the Kugelis to rest for 10–15 minutes before serving. This helps it firm up and makes slicing much easier.
Serve with:
- Sour cream
- Crispy bacon sauce
- Mushroom sauce
- Fresh vegetables or pickles
This hearty, comforting meal is perfect for family lunches, weekend dinners, or entertaining guests.
